Also known as Nervous Goats, Wooden-Leg Goats, Scare Goats, Fainting Goats, and Tennessee Fainting Goats, this breed is a multi-purpose goat derived from a variety of strains of goats that were originally from Tennessee. Used as either pets or as a meat goat, many claim that meat from this breed is more tender than other breeds, possibly from their myotonia congenita, a genetic condition that causes their muscles to stiffen or “lock up” from 10 to 30 seconds. This doesn’t cause the animal any harm or pain, but can lead some very amusing results when the goats play with each other or are startled by something!
We have just started purchasing our breeding stock, and do not expect babies until April or May of 2011. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy these photos of our girls and our mascot “George” – a wether who believes he is a lap goat! Many thanks to Nonie Wilkins of No-Knees Zoo in Gold Hill, OR for our four herd does (and George!)
NOK No-Knees Zoo George DOB 03-02-09 Our wether George is the one who started it all! He has not only gone camping with the family, but now also has his own fan club. When friends hear we are coming for a visit, his presence is always requested! The middle and right photos show George with some of his fans.
NOK No-Knees Zoo Sissy DOB 03-02-09 Sissy is one of George’s sisters. She is the most talkative of the bunch. Before we brought her home, George would verbally answer if you called his name. Then his talkative sister showed up, and now he lets her do all the talking for him!
NOK No-Knees Zoo Swiss Miss DOB 03-02-09 Swiss Miss is George’s other sister. She is a very sweet girl, but, being the “middle kid”, she’s sometimes is overlooked by her older and younger siblings! She has good conformation, lovely light brown eyes and a neat coat pattern.
NOK No-Knees Zoo Spectacles DOB 03-07-09 So named because of the brown blotches around each blue eye, Spectacles is our daughter’s doe. She has the best muscling of all of the does, and being handled so frequently, is also one of the first to fun to the gate to be let out for a romp.
NOK No-Knees Zoo Tippy DOB 02-22-09 One of four at her birth, Tippy is our son’s doe. She also has wonderful muscling along her back line and hindquarters. A little shyer than our other does, Tippy is aptly named!
Ancient Valley Monte Cristo DOB 01-29-08 Many thanks to Jessica of
Faint Hearted Farms in Lancaster, CA, for selling Monte to us! He will be our foundation stock’s buck after the
Oregon Fainting Goat Show in July of 2010. We are very excited to own such a promising buck, and look forward to having many beautiful babies!
